The following Self-Care Tips are proposed for non-ideal, unsupportive learning environments that lead to negative student experience and performance outcomes. Unfortunately, unsupportive schools do exist. And these solutions will help in the interim.
Self-Care Tips for Studying In Non-Ideal, Unsupportive Student Learning Environments

-Boosts mental health and wellness, lowering emotional and mental symptoms

-Increase immune function
-Grow your confidence to manage your mental health or general issues if you have any.
-Can help you maintain your good health status, positive transformation, and contribute to becoming the best professional you can be.
Tips to Cope Effectively in a Non-ideal Environment:
-When I set aside time to complete my work tasks and there are several external stressors that cannot be immediately resolved because they involve several people, they distract me and negatively impact my student performance, I tell myself to “focus on your work, and ignore the bull shit.”
-Do the best you can.
-Have a purpose to work hard in school. For example; it is to work hard to become a good nurse.
-Work with the appropriate channels in your school and outside resources to help you resolve the issues you face at school that create a non-ideal learning environment.
-Look into your options to transfer to another school. If you have appealing options to transfer to another school and it offers what you need, seize it. You do not, then stick it out at your current school. If you have to stick it out, find ways to supplement your studies and enhance your priorities.
- For example; my priorities are good health, discovery, and clinical nursing experience. Then, I would buy supplemental materials to increase my understanding of difficult concepts, review and understand these new topics, and do practice questions to cement what I’ve learned daily. I will seek future clinical experience via internships, mentorship while being trained on the job, or working as a Certified Nursing Assistant to build competence.
-When you’re mentally exhausted, take a break from schoolwork. See my article on “how to rebuild yourself after burnout.” These tips are generally useful self-care tips.

-Always consult with your medical team. This worked for me in addition to other forms of therapies and physical exercise. Find what works for you.
-I highly recommend Montefiore Outpatient Mental Health Services at the Moses Campus, 111 E 210th Street, Bronx, NY 10467. They provide effective psychotherapy and psychiatric services and are one of the best centers in NY for these services. You can choose one or both services.
